DreamBox Insight Roster Upload: Addressing Student Name and ID Errors and Warnings

Math Insight Roster Upload should be used only by customers who set up schools or districts in DreamBox Math before 7/28/2025. New customers that want an upload option should use Discovery Education Bulk Import.

Every student in DreamBox needs to have a unique student ID and their student ID needs to remain consistent each year they use DreamBox. All student progress is associated and tracked in the system using student IDs. As a result, when you upload your Student CSV on the Roster Upload tab, our system scans the file to make sure each student has an ID and each individual student's ID is unique.

School Student ID Missing Error

If you see this error after uploading your spreadsheet, it means that one or more students on the spreadsheet do not have student IDs entered in the School Student ID column (Column F). The number of each row missing an error is listed below the error explanation. In the example above, the student in Row 7 is missing their student ID.

To address missing School Student IDs:

  • Open the student spreadsheet and click the F at the top of column F to highlight the column.
  • Scroll down until you reach the first row identified as missing a student ID.
  • Add the correct student ID for the listed student.
  • Follow the same process to address any rows that are also missing a student ID.
  • If there are no other errors to address in your file, save the file as CSV and upload the file again.

Duplicate School Student ID Error

If you see this error after uploading your spreadsheet, it means that at least two students who have different first or last names also have the same number in their School Student ID columns (Column F).  All Student IDs and the rows of the two or more students who show that student ID are listed below the error explanation. In the example above, the ID used more than once for different students is 8675309, and the students in Rows 2 and 3 are the students who both show that student ID.

To address duplicate School Student IDs:

  • Review the student ID number identified as a duplicate, and then find that student ID in your building scheduling system, Student Information System, or classroom roster. Which student does it belong to in your official records?
  • Open the student spreadsheet and click the F at the top of column F to highlight the column.
  • Scroll down until you reach the first row identified as showing a duplicate School Student ID.
  • Compare the first and last name of this student with the student showing this ID in your records.
    • If both names match the student in your records, continue scrolling down until you reach the second row identified as showing a duplicate School Student ID.
    • If this is clearly a different student, find this student in your records and replace the duplicate ID in the spreadsheet with their correct student ID number.
    • If it is the correct student but shows a variation of their first or last name, adjust the student's first and last names in each row so that both rows show the same name for that student.
  • Follow the same process to address any rows that also were flagged as showing duplicate IDs.
  • If there are no other errors to address in your file, save the file as CSV and upload the file again.

Student ID in Use Error

If you see this warning after uploading your spreadsheet, it means that one or more School Student ID numbers included in your spreadsheet (Column F) is already in use in DreamBox by a student who has a different name than the student on the spreadsheet. In the example above, the three student IDs listed are being used by existing students in DreamBox who have different names than the student names on the spreadsheet.

Student ID in Use: The student IDs you shared are already in use by students with a different name. If you intended to update the existing student’s name you can ignore this warning. If you are trying to create new students instead, please contact DreamBox support to update student IDs. Learn More.

Count of IDs: 3

Student IDs: 768456, 354620, 948253

Rows: 4, 42, 128

This could mean several things:

  1. The spreadsheet lists the updated, correct name and student ID for an existing student and you want to update this student's name in DreamBox. If this is the case, it makes sense that the name on the spreadsheet is different from the name in DreamBox and you can leave these students as-is in the spreadsheet.
  2. The spreadsheet lists the correct name and School Student ID for brand-new students who do not have a DreamBox account. This could mean that a teacher has already manually created an account for that student in DreamBox with a different version of the name, or that student ID is being used by a different student. Please reach out to your internal IT team to confirm the student names and IDs are correct. If they are, reach out to DreamBox Customer Support to correct this before you submit your spreadsheet.

Multiple Students with Same Name Error

If you see this warning after uploading your spreadsheet, it means that at least two students who have the same first and last name show a different number in their School Student ID columns (Column F) on the file. in the example above, those three student names are listed at least twice in the file and show a different student ID in each row.

Multiple Students with Same Name: You’ve shared multiple students with the same first and last name but different student IDs. If you intended to create different students who happen to have the same name, you can ignore this warning. If you are trying to create only one student or create multiple students with unique names and IDs, please update your file. Learn More.

Count of students: 3

Students: John Hogan, Juanita Silva, Vi Danh

Rows: 2, 55, 72, 87, 104, 132, 148

This could mean several things:

  1. The highlighted students are the same student and should show the same name and School Student ID number each time they are listed on the spreadsheet. To address this, review each highlighted row and adjust the student IDs so all instances of the same student show the same student ID.
  2. The highlighted students are different, unique students at your school who happen to have the same first and last name. If this is the case, it makes sense that these students have the same name and different School Student IDs on the spreadsheet. You can leave these students as-is in your file.
  3. The highlighted students are different, unique students and should show different names and different School Student IDs in the file. Review the student names and student IDs in each highlighted row and compare them with the names and student IDs in your records, determine if the student name or student ID needs to be updated in your file, and then adjust and save your file.
