How Do I Set Up Rosters in DreamBox Products?

There are several ways to set up classrooms, class rosters, and create staff and student accounts in DreamBox Math, Reading Park, and Reading Plus. You can use either:

Spreadsheet icon_3 sheets.png A manual method - Use either a CSV spreadsheet upload or build rosters in your dashboard.

Rostering Methods & DreamBox Product Usage and Timing

When your school or district begins using DreamBox products informs the rostering method selection and process. Partners who are starting to use DreamBox products for the very first time will use a different rostering method than existing or returning partners. The table below provides more information.

New

Your district or school is setting up DreamBox Math, Reading Park, or Reading Plus for the very first time. Select a method from those available to new customers. You can use the same rostering method across all DreamBox and Discovery Education products. 

Current

Your district or school is currently using DreamBox Math, Reading Park, or Reading Plus.  Continue using the rostering method you are currently using. If you would like to transition to a different method at the beginning of a new school year, select from the methods available for existing customers

Returning

Your district or school used DreamBox Math, Reading Park, or Reading Plus in the past and are starting to use one or more product/s again.  Welcome back! You can use the same rostering method you used in the past or select a different method from those available for existing customers

Data Sync Rostering Options (New Customers)

There are multiple ways to set up reocurring syncs with DreamBox to update rosters and student and staff accounts throughout the school year. 

CSV Imports for Single-Sign On

Single Sign-On (SSO) allows users to log into Discovery Education with familiar credentials through a portal without going through Clever. However, user accounts within Discovery Education must still be managed by sending .csv files with user data on a regular basis. This can be automated by building a process that generates the .csv files with the appropriate data, then posts it to our SFTP server nightly. We recommend that classes and class rosters are also imported. The import templates and documentation can be found within My Admin > Tools > User Import.

Sync Classes from Google Classroom

If you log in via Google SSO and your district uses Google User Provisioning to sync users, teachers will now be able to import classes from your Google Classrooms account right into Discovery Education. Use our Google Classrooms integration to pull classes and students into our platform, and then select the classes you want to import.

Clever Secure Sync

Clever Secure Sync integrates with your SIS to automatically create, organize, and maintain teacher, student, and class roster data in Discovery Education products. Clever Instant Login (SSO) allows teachers and students access to DreamBox and Discovery Education products rostered through Clever.

PowerSchool AutoSend

PowerSchool’s AutoSend feature can export the SIS data into CSV files and post them to Discovery Education’s SFTP server. This effectively automates user and class data syncing.

Bulk Import Rostering (New Customers)

Users with Admin access to Discovery Education can bulk import teachers, students, classes, and rosters into Discovery Education. If you are able to pull this data from your data management system into .CSV files to use with our Bulk Upload Tool, this is your best option.

Manual Rostering Option (New Customers)

Depending on their permissions in the Discovery Education MyAdmin dashboard, administrators and teachers can manually create teachers, students, and classrooms for DreamBox products.

If your entire school or several schools in your district will use Math, Reading Plus, or Reading Park, we recommend choosing one of our automated options. Automating rosters allows your district to easily update staff and classroom roster data in DreamBox daily or weekly.

Automated Roster Management Options (Existing Customers)

There are three ways to set up daily or weekly sync with DreamBox and update rosters and student and staff accounts throughout the school year. 

1) Clever Automated Roster Management

Clever is a secure, FERPA-compliant, 3rd-party database that can integrate with select student information systems and accepts files through Secure FTP upload. Clever allows you to share some roster data with DreamBox and share additional roster data with different applications. DreamBox integrates with Clever to pull roster data into our provisioning system, where it is reviewed by our Customer Support team prior to processing any changes.

2) Classlink Automated Roster Management 

ClassLink is an IMS Global certified single sign-on solution. ClassLink offers device-agnostic single sign-on (SSO) solutions for school districts, which give students a dashboard to access all synced applications and gives district IT the ability to easily share and sync their SIS data with application providers. Any rostering files that could make significant or unexpected changes to your DreamBox rosters are reviewed by our Customer Support team. If an update appears to be out of the ordinary for your district, we will reach out directly to your IT team.

3) DreamBox Automated Roster Management (ARM)

With DreamBox ARM, your district sends roster data in a CSV file directly to DreamBox through Secure FTP upload. The roster data is ingested into our provisioning system and our Customer Support team reviews and processes the updates, adding an additional level of data validation. If an update appears to be out of the ordinary for your district, we will reach out directly to your IT team.

Manual Upload/Import Options (Existing Customers)

For existing DreamBox customers, the Math and Reading rostering tools are part of the same system. They will attempt to match students, educators, and classrooms in your roster files with existing accounts in DreamBox Math or Reading. 

If your district or school is using a DreamBox Math and Reading product, you need to upload and update Math rosters completely before starting the Reading import and  update process.

1) Math: Insight Dashboard Roster Upload (IRU)

Set up rosters in DreamBox Math by preparing and uploading Educator and Classroom/Student files through the educator dashboard.  After we process your files, your DreamBox rosters will not update unless you and your team make the changes using dashboard tools or upload additional files. Math Insight Roster Upload is a good option if you need to roster specific students inside multiple classrooms at one or more schools, create administrator accounts in bulk, or create specialty classrooms that exist outside your SIS system.

2) Reading: Manual Roster Import

Create and update DreamBox Reading teachers, students, and classrooms in bulk using Manual Roster Import. After we process your files, your DreamBox rosters will not update unless you and your team make the changes using dashboard tools or upload additional files.
