What are we targeting?
In early elementary, students first experience patterns involving shapes. They build their understanding first by identifying a pattern, then completing a pattern, and finally extending a pattern. This algebraic thinking and reasoning continue in later grades by recognizing a counting pattern from a list of numbers and then completing that list of numbers following the same pattern. Finally, this understanding of patterns is extended as students identify an operative rule given a series of inputs and outputs in a function.
The relationships observed in patterns of shapes, lists, and rules build the mathematical reasoning that is necessary as students move into deeper algebraic concepts. The points on a linear function are following a pattern, or a rule, such as “add 5.”
Shapes Description
In Patterns with Shapes, Colors, and Real World Objects, students will build a foundation for their algebraic thinking and reasoning skills by identifying, extending, and completing patterns.

Lists Description
In Patterns with Lists, students will begin to develop their algebraic thinking and reasoning skills by using the numbers they see in a list to identify what the counting pattern is and complete the list of numbers following the same pattern.

Rule Description
In Patterns with a Rule, students will continue to develop their algebraic reasoning skills by identifying an operative rule being used to show a series of inputs and outputs in a function table.

How will students see these lessons?
These lessons have been added to multiple grade levels. Patterns with Shapes, Colors, and Real-World Objects can be found in Kindergarten and 1st grade content. Patterns with Lists spans Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Patterns with Rules is found in 3rd and 4th grade content.
These lessons have been carefully integrated into the full suite of DreamBox Math lessons. Students who are working in lessons beyond these will not need to complete these lessons. If a student is currently working on content at this grade level, then they will see these lessons on their lesson chooser at the appropriate time.
