When students transition from the K-2nd grade learning environment to the 3rd-5th grade learning environments it can be a surprise to students. This article is an overview of how students are placed in the 3rd-5th grade environment and what students see when they move from the K-2nd grade to the 3rd-5th grade environment.
How Students Are Placed in the Grades 3-5 Math Learning Environment
Students are placed into the grades 3rd-5th learning environment in one of two ways:
| Students who are new to DreamBox Math | Students with existing DreamBox Math accounts | ||
| New students rostered or set at 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade are automatically placed into the 3rd-5th grade learning environment. |
Teachers (or parents of students who use DreamBox Math outside of a school subscription) can manually graduate current students from the K-2nd grade learning environment into the 3rd-5th grade learning environment in their educator dashboards.

What Changes When a Student Moves from the Grades K-2 to the Grades 3-5 Math Environment?
When a student moves from the K-2 to the 3-5 environment, their tokens do not transition with them, and the following actions are restricted:
Students lose access to My House in DreamBox Math
This means:
- They can no longer print certificates. (Students may want to print certificates before they move.)
- They can no longer see Adventure Friends.
- Their avatars change and they can't change them to a grades K-2 avatar. (They may want to print a picture of their avatar before they move.)
What happens to the tokens students earned in the K-2nd grade environment?
A student's K-2nd grade tokens (sometimes called coins by students) are converted to the coins that are used in the 3rd-5th grade environment. Tokens are converted to coins at a rate of 1 token = 100 coins.
Students cannot be returned to the grades K-2nd grade environment unless their enrolled grade level is also reset
This means:
- If the student should see the K-2nd grade environment, their enrolled grade level needs to be set to K, 1, or 2, and you need to contact DreamBox Customer Support to request the adjustment.
- The DreamBox Math Intelligent Adaptive Learning™ will continue to select lessons based on student progress, not their enrolled grade level or learning environment.

What Do Students See After They Move?
After a student is moved to the 3rd-5th grade environment, they will watch a video introduction to the new environment that will:
- Congratulate them on their progress.
- Welcome them to the 3rd-5th grade environment.
- Provide a brief overview of the new environment so they get used to the differences in the layout, lesson selection, incentives, and how to track their progress.
