Why Does My Student Find DreamBox Math Lessons Too Easy?

Is the student flying through lessons, understanding the  material, and possibly losing motivation to keep playing? Keep reading to learn more about some common reasons and next steps.

Your student just started DreamBox Math

When students begin using DreamBox Math for the first time, they start playing lessons at a level one half-grade below their starting grade placement. Some students may find DreamBox Math to be “too easy” at first, but as they play and complete lessons the program will adapt to their current understanding and begin recommending more challenging lessons.

Support Icons_Tip Box_50px.png Recommended next steps: Ask the student to play and complete several lessons to help DreamBox Math continue to "learn the learner" as quickly as possible.

Your student's initial grade-level placement was too low

Because students start playing lessons at a level one half-grade below their starting grade placement, it is important that their initial placement is as accurate as possible. If a student was placed one or more grades below their current understanding it may take longer for DreamBox Math to adapt after a student begins playing for the first time.

Why Does My Student Find DreamBox Math Lessons Too Difficult?

Is the student struggling to complete lessons on their own? Are they seeing lessons on concepts well beyond their current understanding? Keep reading to learn more about some common reasons and next steps.

DreamBox Math is adjusting to find the right level of challenge for your student

As DreamBox Math learns what each student understands, it may present a series of questions that are too difficult for the student. This is when it is essential that a student works through a lesson using the in-lesson help and, if needed, coaching from an educator or family member. If the student is able to complete lessons with some guided support, the program is learning and will start to adjust which lessons it recommends next.

Recommended next steps: Ask the student to continue to play and complete several lessons to help DreamBox Math understand and adjust the recommended lessons.

Your student had help completing lessons from a friend or family member

If a friend or family member helps a student find solutions and complete lessons when they are struggling, the DreamBox Math will assume the student understands more than they do. The program will adapt to the friend or family member’s understanding of a concept instead of the student’s understanding, recommending lessons that may be too difficult for the student to complete independently. If this is the reason a student is struggling, our Customer Support Team will need to adjust the student's placement.

Your student's initial grade-level placement was too high

Just like it may take the program longer to adjust if a studen was placed several grade levels below their current understanding, if a student was placed one or more grades above their current understanding it may take longer for DreamBox Math to adapt when a student is struggling. This is common if a student should be placed one or more grade levels below their enrolled grade level.

How Can I Adjust Student Placement?

Encourage consistent, engaged, DreamBox Math sessions

Encouraging students to play and complete lessons to the best of their ability, even if they think it is boring or difficult. DreamBox Math adjusts based on the data from a student's completed lessons. If a student is switching between lessons without finishing them, geting help from a friend or family member, or answering questions randomly to finish a lesson as quickly as possible, the program will adjust inaccurately. Keep in mind that this is by design — DreamBox Math is constantly assessing and learning what your student already knows to create a learning path unique to each student.

After a student has signed into DreamBox Math, educators cannot adjust their placement.  Families can adjust a student's grade level, but this will not affect their placement.

If a student had help completing mulitple lessons or needs such a signficant placement update that adjusting your student's placement manually is the only viable solution, we can make the manual adjustment for you.
