WHY IS MY STUDENT WORKING BELOW THEIR GRADE LEVEL? WHY ARE THESE LESSONS TOO EASY?
DreamBox Learning usually needs some time to adjust to students’ instructional levels when they first start. When students begin using DreamBox Learning for the first time, they start at a level one half-grade prior to their current grade. For this reason, it’s actually common for a student’s first experience with DreamBox Learning to be “too easy”.
Keep in mind that this is by design — DreamBox is constantly assessing and learning what your student already knows. If your student thinks lessons are too easy, encourage them to complete the lessons to the best of their ability. DreamBox will quickly determine that your student is ready for advanced concepts and will adjust to their pacing and comprehension accordingly.
It is important that students are completing every lesson they start. DreamBox makes its adjustments based on the data from completed lessons, and if a student is not giving DreamBox this data, then adjustment will occur far more slowly. Encourage your student to complete every lesson, even if they think it’s a little boring or difficult, and you’ll soon see more appropriate lessons being presented.
CAN I ADJUST MY STUDENT'S PLACEMENT INSTEAD?
DreamBox bases its curriculum on a student's demonstrated instructional level, and progression is led by their personalized input. DreamBox strives to teach, through practice and progression, many different strategies for doing complex math without using outside tools (paper, calculators, their fingers, etc). If students were to skip past too many lessons, they may not get the opportunity develop these important skills, leading to frustration and confusion when confronted with more complex problems to solve.
We typically do not recommend moving a student in the DreamBox curriculum to address the issue of lessons being too easy/difficult. It is best to let the student guide their own learning by completing lessons to the best of their ability. If you are certain that adjusting your student's placement is the only viable solution, we can make the manual adjustment for you. This may be necessary when a student has been away from DreamBox Learning for over a year or if a sibling or friend has made progress in their account.
If your student’s DreamBox Learning account is provided by their school, the request to adjust the student’s placement needs to come from the student’s teacher. Those with a paid, home subscription may contact DreamBox Support.
